On December 19, 2023, my life changed in an instant. At 5:56pm, my husband suffered a seizure and that started the journey of the Little Plant Farmacy.
In the next 24 hrs we would learn that he had a brain tumour the size of a grapefruit on his front right lobe. The neurologists believe it had been slowly growing for probably a decade.
One long 7 hour surgery, 5 weeks of inpatient rehab and 6 weeks of daily doses of chemo and radiation later… we struggled to figure out what had caused his brain cancer (yes, it was malignant). He eats healthy, has an active lifestyle, has never smoked, is of ideal body weight…and then we considered environmental factors…
He works as a mechanical engineer where he is exposed daily to various types of vehicle fuels and fumes. Despite having been told at his former job of the hazards associated with the chemicals he was being exposed to, as a young 24 year old, you think you are invincible and when no one else is wearing protective equipment, you’re not likely to be the first. That’s simply the reality of social pressures.
We believe that the 8 years of exposure took it’s toll and so our focus became on eliminating any other possible carcinogens in our daily lives. We switched to natural household cleaners, reduced our intake of processed foods, eliminated alcohol and incorporated natural bath and beauty products into our daily routine.
Your skin is your largest organ. Why would you put a product with a long list of unpronounceable chemicals on it? I started looking into how to make my own soap. One batch of bars under my belt and I was hooked.
And so began the Little Plant Farmacy.
